Upcoming report: What are the top 10 children’s health concerns in 2015?
Each year, the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health asks adults across the country to rate what children’s health concerns are a “big problem.” These responses are compiled into a list of the top 10 biggest kids’ health concerns and reported in our annual NPCH Top 10 Report.
The 2015 edition of the NPCH Top 10 Report will be released next week! Let’s take a look back at the last two years’ top 10 lists in anticipation of next week’s release.
2013
Top child health concerns: Obesity, drug abuse and smoking
In 2013, adults rated childhood obesity as their number one concern for the health of kids in their communities. But adults from different racial/ethnic backgrounds had different top 10 lists. Bullying was listed as the second overall children’s health concern among Hispanic adults. Black adults rated school violence as their #3 concern and their top 10 list also included gun related injuries (#8); neither of these topics was in white adults’ top 10 list.

2014
School violence, gun-related injuries in top 10 child health concerns in U.S.
In 2014, we asked adults to rate the health concerns for kids in their communities as well as kids across the U.S. This was the first time we compiled the top 10 lists for the nation as a whole as well as local communities.
School violence and gun-related injuries made it into the top 10 list of concerns about the health of kids across the country, although they were not in the list of concerns for the children in adults’ local communities. In the local community list, childhood obesity, smoking & tobacco use, and drug abuse once again took the top three spots.
