“Study drugs”: Are parents aware of the risks?
When adults are asked to name the biggest health problems facing kids in their communities, drug abuse consistently ranks among the top concerns. There has been a recent increase of teens misusing prescription stimulants that are often used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Teens sometimes use these for the purposes of staying awake or alert to try to improve their grades and test scores.
Are parents aware of “study drug” use among teens? To find out, we asked a national sample of parents of teens from across the country about their concerns about misuse of prescription stimulants by their teenagers and by other teens in their communities.
